The Legend of Luther Strode: NYCC Ashcan 2012 by Tradd The Legend of Luther Strode: NYCC Ashcan 2012 by Tradd
Here are the pages that I did for our NYCC 2012 Ashcan, in which Team Strode (from left to right: Justin, myself, and Felipe) makes an introduction and ZOMBIE PETE makes his ethereal debut to showcase Luther's strange talents! Also, a man gets kicked in two.

You can see the pages split up individually on my BLOG: [link]

Enjoy!

Haha, I know, right? I miss little ol' Pete.

Also, regarding Justin and Binder, I actually based Binder off of Justin. Good catch! The concept was Justin/Vietnam war veteran/biker gang member.

YEAH. That's what I like to hear!

And no, Julia, thank YOU. Judging from personal interactions, apparently you introduced Luther Strode to every student at The Kubert School. Ha, seriously. I've had, like, 10 kubies mention to me that their friend Julia showed them my artwork. Thanks so much for that!

Hmmm, does Amazon ship to India? I believe it does, but I'm not sure. If so, you can snag it from there (assuming that you're talking about The Strange Talent of Luther Strode!):

Lemme axe you somethin: You do the inking yourself. So do you take certain liberties with your pencils knowing you will be inking them later? For instance, are your pencils just as detailed as the inks or can you let some slide on the pencil job and do it when you ink? Also, when you scan your pages in how do you clean them up and make them nice and clean and black? Thanks bruh! Nice work!

Tradd Featured By Owner Dec 8, 2012  Professional
Yeah, son! I pencil really loosely, that way there is still a lot of decision making to be made in the inking process. Keeps me interested and speeds up the process. To me, inking can be mind-numbingly boring and superfluous if the pencils are already perfect. Scroll down on this interview ( [link] ) and you can see my page process from start to finish!

As for cleaning up the pages, there are two ways. First, I turn the page to grayscale. Then you can either:

1 - Adjust the levels. On photoshop, just go to Image->Adjustments->Levels. You can do "auto levels", but you'll probably want to adjust more from there. The black slider bumps up the darkness/lightness of the black on the page, and the white slider does the same for the white. There are also a couple eye dropper tools on the levels menu that you can use. Use the black one to click on whatever part of the page you want to be pure black and the white one to click on whatever you want to be pure white. Long story short, it takes a bit of getting used to, but goof around with it for a minute and you'll figure it out.

2 - Threshold the image. Image->Adjustments->Threshold. This one is easier, but can be jarring if you're not accustomed to it. What it does is turn the image to pure black and white. When you zoom in to 100%, the image will look a bit jagged and pixelated. Perfectly clean, but sometimes really subtle line work will be lost. That said, once it's colored/shrunk down/put to print, you can't tell. I typically only use this on pieces that I know will be colored. Ex: 99% of the pages from Luther Strode have been thresholded.

Hopefully that helps, dude!

One keeps it loose in order to ink and not trace those pencils. And you make that method look good, as always, my friend.
